Jeneric Jeneralities ~ by JenIG

Wow! You guys are SOOOOOO talented!  They were all so good that I asked Marshie to do the honors and pick a Winning Poet for me….  Here is what she emailed to me:

I
was very impressed with Tonya's poem sung to a tune; mamasmurf's
poem reminded me of my own not-so-good memory; Melkhi was brave
and clever enough to add on to the great Robert Louis Stevenson; and
Starlady has got some very talented children…  Actually there
were too many good entries to make this easy…

But
the romantic in me couldn't help but dreamily *sigh* at dear
JocelynDixon's poem about her Knight in shining armor.

So there you have it!  Congrats JocelynDixon! email me at JenIG@TOSMag.com and give me your addy so i can send you your prize.

*********************** original post:

Do you like poems?
Do you like ryhmes?
Do you like lemons
With your limes?

I have a new contest sponsored by our friend, Andrew Pudewa, you know that brilliant fellow from the Institute for Excellence in Writing?
We met up with him again at the FPEA convention.  He seems so
smart and intelligent and scholarly.  I'm always tempted to go up
and slap him on the back and say, “Hiya Andy!”  Anyways,  I
have a set that he sent over ($65 value) that one of you lucky bloggers
will win.  The set is called, Linguistic Development through
Poetry Memorization.  And it looks very very superly
fantacular.  As a matter of fact, TOS did a review on this program, you can read it here

If you would like to win, simply come up with a poem (it has to be at least two lines long).  Here's an example:

Geoff the Great, he met his Fate
One dark and stormy night
He hiccupped up, he hiccupped down
From dusk till morning light

See? it's not that hard.  I came up with a whole FOUR lines right
off the top of my head.  Let the poem wars begin….

And then check out some of Mr. Pudewa's other excellent resources!

    I SO want to win

    This awesome set

    It’s the only way

    I’ll likely get

My hands on such a cool resource

For teaching our co-op English course

for teens who do not want to write

More than a sentence without a fight

The poetry class I taught in the past

Was slightly less than a fun filled blast

Of their moaning and groaning I’m really sick

So please have mercy and make me your pick

p.s. You can see….this is BAD poetry…so me teaching this class is like the blind leading the blind. You should be charitable to blind people.

more succint entry…to up my chances if you draw from a hat or something hehehehehe

    Please pick me

    Okay… here goes..

    On Jen’s old blog

    was a goat…no… a dog

And now there’s a sniffing maiden

    If she picks me

    I’ll be full of glee

With the spoils my kids I’ll be aidin’

    okay….so how’s that one!!!?

    a poem

    A poem you want

    In any font?

    How can it be,

    For so little a fee?

Would you like it with cheese?

    Or just ‘pretty please’?

  5. MuckFootMom said,

    uh …

I do not think you should pick me

I am as lame as lame can be

I gather up resources in giant loads

they sit under dust like frozen toads

I’m pretty pathetic almost all the time

although I do like to write in rhyme

so rather than gather unused things for free

just award me some points for my blunt honesty

    Okie dokie…

There once was a blogger named Jay,

She loved to type all through the day.

She found this great place from TOS,

And knew it was a dangerous place to play.

Dangerous, you ask? Yes–full of snares,

She sits down & doesn’t put on airs…

She loves reading about JenIg’s gardening..

When her veggies aren’t stolen by hares.

Our blogger reads all about her friends…

Good wishes she always tries to sends.

It’s so nice that she has this place

Where rules we can sometimes bends.

    —Okay…this is exhausting! I give!

    "Nother Contest?"

Who has time to enter a contest?

The new puppy has the runs.

Oh, how I need blissful rest

    from cleaning up puppy buns!

    The downstairs toilet is clogged

Thanks to a hot wheel car.

    Husband and floor got sogged

Now a hole in floor, will we make par?

So you see, about the time

Which I think has been flushed

With all the other poopy grime.

My hours spent has been crushed.

So here’s to the one who will win

    Hopefully more time they had

to thoughtfully let their minds spin.

The prize will surely make glad.

Here’s one for you and Gena:

There once were two sisters out West

Who thought that a move would be best

    Tennessee was the place

    So East they did race

    And found themselves wondrously blessed.

    And one for Coie:

    There was a fair maiden-in-waiting

Who shunned the idea of dating

    Her folks looked around

    Until they had found

The young man with an excellent rating!

Fun contest! (Except that I was lying awake at 4AM with rhymes running through my head!)

    Newman Poem

There once was a frog named T.H. Logian

On lily pads he was a croakin’

Life was good for this intelligent guy,

From his pond he all could spy.

He had a system for everything known

Other frogs gave him a Crown.

But this king he lacked a family

That alone would make him happy.

A wife he took with due haste,

and a moments notice it was a race.

They wanted children which could replace

their righteous ways all over the place.

Oh, their plan was swell and grand,

to conquer the ponds and the land.

Just one problem you will see,

    They treated their children differently.

You see frogs are tadpoles at the first,

That is why they are born immersed.

“They are not frogs dear wife of mine,

simply blank slates who mimic and mime.”

To treat them now as frogs, Absurd!

They should be seen and not be heard.

But they will grow and soon become frogs,

right now they’re dead as wooden logs.

I will wait, I will wait for him

He, who will come and meet my every need

I will give him my heart and he will be sure it will not break

If I fall he will catch me

If I cry he will wipe my tears

I know not his name, I know not the sound of his voice

I know not the hour he will come, riding upon his horse in shining armor.

But when he comes I will be ready

I will wait, I will wait for him….My Knight in shining armor

and another one I wrote when I was 11yrs old…

    Friendship by Jocelyn Dixon

Friendship is not something you do or say,

    But something you have.

    And it’s very special!

Okay, Jen. I have just been lurking, but this contest is just too hard to resist.

My poem shall be sung to the tune of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”.

Oh, I want to win this contest ’cause I have a lot of boys

They are oh so very rowdy but they bring me lots of joys.

I think they need some culture to cut down on all the noise

    And poetry would help.

chorus : glory, glory hallelujah…. (every one knows this part)

    Verse 2:

If they’re reciting poetry it seems to me they’ll be

more int’rested in schoolwork than in climbing too tall trees.

And maybe I won’t find more bones in the washing machine,

    Oh poetry would help!

    I’m sure of it ????Maybe???

    My (very poor) poem!

On a little piece of paper,

    With a very scratchy pen,

    I wrote this little poem

    But I can’t remember when!

    Perhaps it was last Monday

A day that was so hot

I wrote it then, I think so

    Or perhaps I did not?

Was it written on my birthday

    So many moons ago?

Or maybe in that traffic jam,

    When everything went so slow?

    Ah, now I do remember!

    I wrote it just now,

So I’ll finish with a flourish

    And take my final bow!

Told you it was a bad ‘un, didn’t I? – eat your heart out, Shakespeare – here we come!!

    My kids poetry

Since it’s for the kids ya know, I thought I’d have my kids write some poetry for your contest. 🙂

Here’s my 8 year olds two poems, typed just the way she wrote them. 😉 Just so you know, she really really really likes fish and the ocean. (oh and Gill. You’ll have to check out my blog to see just how much Gill is an integral part of our lives LOL)

    Untitled

    In the spring,

    the coral shoots up.

    In the spring,

    the fish swim.

    In the spring,

    the gills come again.

The spring makes us get up and sing.

    “Gills have come!

    I love them.

    Little snows are off.

    Long vacations here!”

    “G.I.L.L.”

    ___________________________

    The Ocean

The ocean is a wonderful thing,

It has all the fish who want to sing,

Because it is a pretty place,

The ocean has its own current,

It has all the rainbows of the world,

If you want to see the rainbow before it

Rains, you are lucky if you have fish.

All day long, the ocean goes

Against the waves and lives on

In its own race of fish, and other things,

It wins against all living things,

    Beside God, it can survive.

It is the whales who are the kings,

It is the dolphins who are the queens,

And even though there are so many,

The fish are still not the poor ones.

They are the colors of the rainbow, too,

They are purple, green, orange and blue,

And even when the water is stained and

    All muddy with pollution,

And dead fish are near you,

The ocean stays hopeful with God,

    In a very faithful Rainbow!

Now, my 6 year olds. I’m writing it as she wrote it but fixing her creative spelling. Guess we should check into Mr. Pudewa’s spelling curriculum while we’re at it 😀

    The Fish

In the sea where the little fish swim,

I have a little fish that swims from the sea to me.

    The End.

She even drew a lovely picture to go along w/ it. Does that count? LOL

Fun contest. I was going to check out this curriculum at our convention in a couple of weeks. I’ve heard great things about it. 🙂

    I'll give it a try….

While DD11 and I were studying insects last year I made this one up for the praying mantis we found:

    Lunch

He folds his arms as if in prayer

while quiety he waits and stares

And no one ever knows he’s there.

‘Till suddenly a speck zooms by

and quicker than I blink my eye

    Mr. Mantis grabs a fly.

And while he sits to slowly munch,

His brother’s eyeing him for lunch.

The end is coming….that’s my hunch.

    Here are my poems…

    Bees

There are a bunch of bees in a hive,

    they make honey,

    but not for money.

    Bees are very good,

    they do as they should.

    Bees are yellow and black,

    pollen is their snack.

    They like flowers,

    and they work for hours.

(We should all work like a bee,

    shouldn’t we?)

    ——————————————————————————–

    or another one is…

    By Willow B.

    Grade 6, Alabama

Squirrels jump from tree to tree,

    They never jump on me!

    They are grey and furry,

    and they also scurry.

    When my cat comes,

    squirrels chatter at him tons.

    I like squirrels a lot,

I hope they do not get caught.

    ———————————————————————

    or…

    Fall

    I like Fall,

    The trees are so tall!

All the leaves fall to the ground,

I rake them into a big mound.

Then I run and I jump,

    Into the big lump,

    of big crumbling leaves.

    I see birds fly past,

    They are going fast.

Way up high in the sky,

they fly and fly and fly.

    They are going South.

    I shout with my mouth,

    “See you next spring!”

    “Don’t hurt your wing!

    The weather is so nice.

    I will give some advice,

    when the winter comes,

    there will be ice.

I love to play outside in the Fall,

not inside walking around in a mall.

I like to swing and ride my bike,

or go to the park and take a hike.

    Well, that’s it.
