No…. More…. Aaaaapples

Seriously, I am thankful for the abundance
of apples from our lone solitary apple tree factory — but I am
seriously tired of making apple pies.  Yesterday I made twelve
apple pies. TWELVE. That's crazy.  Today I made two humongatory
apple cobblers (which are enormously easier to make, by the way).
Luckily, tomorrow I will get a break from the Apple Factory because I
will be up in Virginia hanging out with all our VA blogger friends
(hosted by the lovely Mrs. Austin) If you are anywhere near VA, you really ought to come.  Click here for all the details.  I'm bringing the apple cobblers for all to share.

So anyway, after my blissful one-day Apple Sabbatical, I will be back
in my kitchen — or on the internet– bumbling around for more apple
ideas.  I'm considering apple jelly and applesauce.  I hope
you can freeze apple pies because I have about twenty of them in my
freezer right now.

Are you tired of hearing about apples?  I'm tired of writing about
apples.  I can't seem to get away from apples.  THEY'RE
EVERYWHERE <insert creepy Howard Dean scream here>

I should be better within a few weeks… the apples will be gone….
and then it will be peach season.

yeah, I’m pretty much sick of picking apples, seeing apples, hearing about apples, tasting new apple concoctions, and now, sick of typing apples. In fact, I never liked apples from the start. If I had to describe apples with one look, it’d be this:

um…I want an apple pie. What in the world do you do with 12 apple pies? Solution: bring one to your friend. . . me.

    I am waiting.

I have the vanilla ice cream all ready.

Oh yeah, I thought apples came in the fall. Who knew.

Er, Coie? Can you help with that?

Do applesauce! You know, I don’t do anything that requires too much hard work (like making a gazillion pies), but I do make applesauce. All you have to do is cut up the apples – you don’t even have to peel them!- cook ’em down a little, and run ’em through one of them there Squeez-o machines. Add sugar and cinnamon and freeze. Easy peasy.

Or you could just ship all those extra apples to, oh, I don’t know, someone in Texas???

    Freezing Apple Pies

I have never frozen an apple pie but Mrs. Smith does. You can find hers in the freezer section of your local grocery store. My grandmother makes THE BEST applesauce in the whole world. She makes apple butter too. I think you just make apple sauce and cook it longer. I also think she slices and freezes just the apples. Not sure though. I guess I’m not being very helpful……..too early in the morning.

You know…. you could can the apples for making apple pie at a later date. It’s called apple pie filling. Yup. Then you can just take down a jar of apple pie filling, open it up, dump it in the pie shell, bake it and Whalla! Apple pie!

Canning the apples won’t take up room in your freezer, and if the freezer dies you don’t have to wonder how you will eat it all up. You can also make applesauce. YUM!

Maybe you could put some in a box and mail them to me. That wouldn’t be too heavy would it? Oh- they probably don’t let you mail produce. Oh well, it was a good idea anyways.

Wish you could MAIL them! You know-apple pies are great, but have you ever thought of canning applesauce? MUCH less work-crust can be a tedious thing! You might want to try THAT out…and it doesn’t require FREEZER space (you must have a HUGE one!) Love, Rebecca from Renaissance

    An apple idea –

If you like it – you can make the best apple butter in the crock pot. That is simple too. I am afraid that I don’t have a recipe – but I am sure that an internet search will help you out. I am pretty sure you can make applesauce that way too.

OH YEAH – and bigredriver is one of my best friends!!!! I can’t believe she won – that is too cool.

I make apple butter in the crockpot. You just cut up apples and completely fill the crockpot with them. Add a ton of sugar, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg and …Voila! Apple Butter! It is super easy and uses a ton of apples up! We freeze it in tupperware type containers. I, also, cut up apples for pie and then just freeze them in freezer bags. Then I can make apple pie throughout the rest of the year. I'm all into freezing! Canning just seems too hard.

    How about…

Well I just had this great idea! I was going to suggest that you could make applesauce and then make some applebutter in the crockpot. I have done both and they are really easy! Then I looked and realized that 18 other people had already suggested the same thing!!!!!!! SPOOKY!!! Does belonging to HSB give us all an ESP type link or do we really all think that much alike?!?!?!?

Well, I do the applesauce in Oct. It’s easy, but it’s still hot and tiring. Last year we got an electric mill, so James, who went to pick up the apples for me in Cosby, thought, “Well, since we have an electric one, it will go much faster, so we can make more!” We won’t discuss my reply! : o We did 4 bushels of apples, which equaled 94 quarts of applesauce. Man was I tired.

good luck, and send a pie on over.

How about stewed apples in Mason jars. Course being the suburban person that I am, I have no idea how you do that, but I always thought it would look so homey to have fruit and veggies “put up” in Mason jars in my pantry. They’d taste wonderful, too, ’round about January.

The pies some delish and I bet your house smelled wonderful!!

I was going to give you the applesauce/butter/slice the apples and put them “pie ready” in the freezer idea, but since everyone has said that…

What about a rotten apple fight? That’s what my sister does with her apples when she’s sick of them. WAY more fun than actual work. >cheezygrin<

Artsy Mama, that was so funny that i actually laughed out loud (it was actually more of a ‘guffaw out loud’) and nothing hardly ever makes me do that. You get ten points and a bag of Oreos.

Speaking of apples, have you ever tried apple butter? It is one of my favorite treats. I don’t know how to make it from fresh apples, but I know it is delicious on toast or biscuits with a little regular butter ๐Ÿ™‚ I think you can make it in the crockpot too…
