Attack of the Rabid Closet
Last night I could not sleep again. I mean, at all. I hate that. But I am productive on those nights, so I guess it's not all bad. I wandered around the house, cleaned some of the 20 pounds of blueberries we picked last week, wrote my article for the Spring 07 issue of TOS , went thru a bunch of emails, surfed news websites, and remembered that there is something lurking in my closet. My desk is about three feet from my walk in closet, and around 3:30 am a very loud, disturbing noise from my closet began squacking at me. There is either a cricket, cicada or a rattle snake in there. I haven't got my Tennessee wildlife all figured out yet, but whatever it is, it is L.O.U.D. I hope it dies soon. There nothing worse than an unidentifiable noise that you can't get rid of.
In other news, if you are in the East Tennessee area, you ought to come out to the Sevierville Homeschool Welcome Night this Thursday. That's not what it's called but I lost my flier. Maria Roy is the big shot organizer for that, so email her from her blog pg and she'll get you all the details (me and Coie ran into her at Starbucks last night. She looked so pretty with her seven month tiny pregnant tummy). It'd be fun to see you! Plus, Paul, Gena's husband, will be speaking on “Why Homeschooling is Not an Option”. And if that is not a good enough reason…. there will also be food there.
I sure hope I can sleep tonight. What do you do when you can't sleep? |

Ha!
If Tennessee crickets are like the ones in Texas, he won’t die! He’ll just invite all of his friends and family over for a late night orchestra.
It’s funny that I read your post about Paul’s upcoming seminar on why homeschooling isn’t an option. I posted our public school nightmare on my blog this morning. Homeschooling is a requirement, a necessity and a God given responsibility!

That was a surprise seeing you and Coie at Starbucks. I was wondering if I would see anyone i knew. You would have not been a gues… lsdfkjalkfjasdlfj
You need to give “Denise” all the credit for tomorrow. I just make sure (along with her) that everything get done.
When I can’t sleep I walk around the house and look for stuff to do. I have dne laundry, read, got on the computer, Lately I haven’t had much trouble though and if I have I have forced myself to try to get back to sleep. Sorry you got somethign in your closet. I have ants.. big ones that surprise us all over the house and the little ones that like to hang around my kitchen. We’ve tried lots of different things but they refuse to leave us alone.
ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR ANTS?
See you soon!

can't what?
Can’t … sleep … I know both those words but can’t make sense of zzzzzzzzz
huh? Oh, I remember now. Can’t sleep means the kids are noisy and/or I’m the responsible adult and not *allowed* to sleep. Or that the baby is in his 17th hour of nurse-to-sleep-but-oh-wait-what-was-that-noise-I’ll-go-investigate-no-wait-I-didn’t-really-want-down-how-could-you-put-me-down-I-want-to-nurse-but-wait-what’s-that-let-me-go-look…
The rest of the time I pretty much fall asleep if I sit down.
11 years of sleep deprivation is a lot to overcome.

Hmm, can't sleep?
I do pretty much the same things you did only if I hear a noise in the closet, it is either going to be a roach or our cat who didn’t get put out for the night. Hope your sleeping gets better!

I do my best work when I can’t sleep.
I redo lists, make new lists, email, blog, pay bills, work on curriculum, tidy the rooms I can get to quietly, fold laundry, watch TV shows I don’t normally indulge in (Stargate Atlantis and Home Improvement… a rare Fear Factory), get some quiet Bible study time in, toss and turn, look to see if it’s too late to call the west coast, look to see if it’s too early to call the east coast, wonder how much it would cost to call Australia– and how to find someone in Australia to call, dream of the RV that will miraculously appear in our driveway someday with Elisha-like gas in the tank, play the piano (in my head), pace, wish I could sleep, and make blog comments that don’t make a BIT of sense.
That’s usually all in the same night.

My country cousins from KY call me a city slicker and really I am but I can tell the difference between a cricket and a rattle snake!
I didn’t sleep much last night. My dh and two teens are gone and I am home alone with my 8 year old. So she is sleeping with me everynight. She is a regular chatter box in the day time but at night she can think of more things to say or ask than she does all day. And when she is asleep, she kicks me or rolls over and hits me with her arm. Those kind of nights – I don’t know…. Now, for regular sleeplessness (not involving hyperactive talkative children) I pray. I’m usually out in no time!
I hope you get some good sleep tonight and have lots of fun at the homeschool convention!

Yo chicky poo!
First of all, you do NOT want the thing in the closet to die there. Then, instead of being loud, it will be STINKY.
Next, when I cannot sleep I take a Benadryl. Well, actually, I take half a Benadryl. Knocks me out within an hour and I sleep very well all night long. The only downside is that it takes a while for me to wake up the next morning, but I would rather have trouble waking but having slept than trouble sleeping and not needing to worry about waking.
Don’t you have a history of cold medicines knocking you out? Then I would take 1/4th a Benadryl.
ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz…..

Sleep? What's that?
I, too, have been having trouble sleeping lately. Not sure what the problem is. I pray and sometimes I try reading the Bible (if the light on will not bother anyone else – after all I do not want to wake anyone else upif I dont have to!). Praying and Bible reading wil usually put me out pretty quick.
As for that thing in your closet, if you leave the door open all day maybe it will flee and find it’s way out. I would not want it dying in there b/c I would not want to find it later…

The only thing worse than the noise is the smell. So you better hope it DOESN’T die. It may not be a cricket. It may be a rare TN swamp monster.
I’m sorry you can’t sleep. Have you eaten anything unusual lately, like a bad muffin?
Maybe you have too much on your mind. Sometimes that interferes with my sleep.
When I can’t sleep, I usually pray. That’s a pretty good cure for insomnia. I know that does not sound spiritual, but it’s true. Ask God how He wants you to use the time and He can even redeem sleepless nights for good. In the book of Esther God used sleeplessness to save the Jewish people! Wow, he can use all things for his Glory!
My youngest calls you JenIgloo. Isn’t that cute? I hope you can get some rest. I really do. It’s no fun the next day being tired.

I can’t sleep right now. I can’t do anything in the house late at night but read or blog. I’d wake everyone up.

Ack….an unknown creature in a closet is enough to keep me awake, too! You’ll have to let us know what it was…sadly, for my husband, I would have him in there searching while I stood on the bed with a broom. LOL

I hope nothing scary comes out of your closet…
There is no not-falling asleep with me! I go to bed at 2-3am and rise at 8-10am. I am always sleepy! 😉 LOL
I hope you find rest for you soul!
Have a Blessed day! Noro go hûl, bado go Eru! No in elenath hîlar nan hâd gîn.

Just stopping by to say hello. Whatever is in your closet sounds kinda scary! But I’m not much for strange noises anyway. 😛
I won’t get to see you guys at the meeting tonight, but I *think* my mom will be there. Anyway, have a nice day and I’ll talk to you later!

You sound like me
I was having trouble the past couple nights sleeping. I hate when that happens. I even take myself off my afternoon coffee to make myself tired.
I did start swimming before bed and that seems to help, but it does seem that those nights when I so desperately want to sleep.. that’s when I can’t or when my DH snores… oh well.. God is faithful and provides either naps or eventual nights sleep.
Your homeschool meeting sounds like fun. Wish I could go.
Have a great day!

O, my…
I hope it’s not a snake. The curiousity would cause me to have my hubby check it out. (yeah, I’m real brave, huh.)

I have done all the above mentioned things when trying to sleep, pray, take an antihistamine, etc. etc. Well, the other night I was wide awake and babysitting a sound asleep 8 month old granddaughter. My dill said go ahead and go to bed she will just sleep but I douldn’t fall asleep. Their home here has about a zillion ways to get in so when I am alone I think on these things. Yes I know I shouldn’t. So I figured some senseless tv would make me sleepy. I hate to admit this since I am a supposedly mature Christian abiga/grandma and I would hate for all of the readers of this to think so little of me but I will be honest. But Highway to Hell was on as I flipped channels and I started watching it. It really is supposed to be a horror type movie but it was ridiculously funny, just hilarious, escept for the fact that I am home alone. As I watched trying to get a good snooze going I heard noises on the porch, quiet sneaky noises. First I coughed loud to make sure anyone would know someone was home. I still heard it. So I flipped to another channel fast thinking God was trying to teach me a lesson here about what not to watch. Then I muted the tv to hear it all better and about that time the little sneaky noises were running away, car doors slamming in the distance, and car driving away. I proceeded to peek out the window carefully and what did I discover but my son’s youth group (the girls we suspect) had toilet papered the front lawn and house. They had done it almost exactly a year ago when he first arrived. This time he said they were trying to thank him for last week’s DCLA meetings he had taken some of them to. The girls were suspect because one of the boy’s homes was done too. I never did turn that movie back on even though I still could not sleep for awhile. So don’t tell anybody this story. Blessings.

I don't do what you do!
I went through a bought of sleeplessness about a month ago and I struggled over what to do … you know, get up and actually do something .. or just read .. or just lay there LONGING to get back to sleep. I did the latter and it NEVER worked. You’ve inspired me .. that if I go through it again .. I will GET UP and DO SOMETHING! I can’t believe what all you accomplished. You go girl!

Hope you figured out what was in the closet AND hope it wasn’t a rattle snake! We’ve had our fair share of unidentifiable sounds lately. Starting with Bats in the attic and ending with snakes in the bathroom (hopefully that’s the end). I just blogged about our snake adventures and then popped over here to see what you were blogging about this week.

If I am having trouble sleeping…
I fix a cup of magnesium (such as Natural Calm but we get the health store’s brand since it is about half price) and it helps a lot. Acutally, it is about 2 heaping teaspoons of the powder in a little hot water and then whatever liquid you want to add to it. I usually just add water. A little bit of organic sugar helps with the tartness since it turns to Magnesium Citrate in the hot water. It fizzes up when you add the hot water so you have to not add very much. Just stir it until it loses the fizz and add the other liquid. It really does help.
Love and shalom,
Serena
