It’s a Butternut What-what??
My husband has always wanted to be a health nut, so when we made some vegan friends a couple days ago, he went all gung-ho and patronized their favorite health food store and put a small order in for organic vegetables. No big deal right? Today, our order comes in, so I went down with him to check things out and snicker. I love all things sugar, salt and meat related so I get a kick out of seeing how the ‘other side’ live. So anyways, the very sweet girl behind the counter rings up our two heads of broccoli, bag of celery, some cloves of garlic and these three yellow gourd looking things called butternut squash. Take a wild guess how much our bag of produce cost. Never mind, I’ll tell you. It was sixty bucks. SIXTY BUCKS. I about fell over and had an organic stroke right then and there. My husband looked over and gave me one of those, “I had no idea it was gonna cost this much / don’t do anything to embarrass me” looks. Sixty bucks??? I’m thinking this had better be some sort of magical organic vegetables that are gonna give us super invisibility powers or let me fly and see thru metal. Sixty bucks!! Believe me, honey, I aint snickerin’ no mo. And if that’s not bad enough, I don’t even know what to do with these big yellow things. I cut one open and it looked all stringy and seedy inside, just like a pumpkin! What in the world?? I’m guessin’ I better figure out real dang quick what to do because they are too expensive to drop kick across my pond. Maybe I can sell them on Ebay. Or I suppose I could carve the other two and display them at the party tomorrow. Ok, I gotta go. The Dixons are gonna be here any minute and I’m gonna try to whip up some magical spaghetti with our million dollar garlic bulbs. |

Too funny– I love organic – I just don't love the prices. Where did you go? See you all tomorrow.

still laughing. you silly. My husband piles fruit and vegetables in the cart when we're at Safeway and I have a fit. Produce is sooooo expensive! Even non organic stuff.
People who farm…..rock! (or homestead) They have the right idea.

Sixty bucks?? Please, please tell me you're exagerating! I get a pretty decent box of organic fruits and veggies every other week for $20. I'm all for organic as far as it's reasonable- I'll pay a little more for it, because it really is better. And I love butternut squash.

Butternut squash
Our favorite kind of squash! Take a sharp knife and stab it all over, and then cook it like a baked potato until the squash feels soft. Make sure you have a pan under it to catch the juice that drips out (I had a major oven clean job to do the first time I cooked it!).
When it is done, cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and stringy stuff, and scrape the rest into a bowl. We like it mashed with butter and a bit of brown sugar. Yum!
The price would put me off Organic for good! Hope you enjoy the squash though.
Blessings,
Karen

Yikes!
That's insanity! Organic in Canada is off-the-wall expensive too. Makes me wonder who can afford to be healthy. I'm with Jen, I love sugar, salt and meat! I do try to eat healthy, though. By the way, I'm "Jen C" and my blog is here too. http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/mamaj

I love butternut squash!
Butternut squash is delicious baked open in halves for about an hour on 350. Then put a dollop of butter and crumble ample brown sugar in the middle of each one and spoon it out. It's soft and heavenly! you won't regret it…hope you get some invisibility or at least super vitamins out it! Enjoy!!

Butternut squash is my favorite! Yeah, what a weirdo. Hey, the baking instructions above are correct, except I put cinnamon and a pinch of salt to bring out the flavor. By the time I eat it, it's more like a dessert :o) I guess that's why it's my favorite.
I tried curry on it once…eeeew. The flavor combination was wrong. And here I thought I could eat Curry Everything!

Wow, that is unbelievably expensive– even for organic! While we do buy organic produce on occasion and organic milk regularly, I have yet to do the beef thing. Hmmm…I wonder how much cow I could get for $60…
Have you thought about joining an organic co-op? Tis MUCH cheaper than that store! Or you can join it and then have your little munchkins resell at the side of the road. 🙂 Who could resist a little boy with those tiny little pigtails???
As far as what to do with the overpriced gourds, maybe cut them in half, sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar and bake them in the oven?
Love,
Marshie

Pie-ish
Scrape out the seeds
(dry and save to plant in the spring–at least that is what my daughter would add).
Cut the squash into chunklets and put in the crockpot with butter, cinnamon and brown sugar. Of course this probably defeats any organic health benefits, but it does taste like pumpkin pie.

How to cook squash
I use organic maple syrup instead of sugar in my squash, but I bake it just like everyone else.

$$$
Maybe you had to pay "Shipping and Handling"!

I couldn't resist commenting
I would bake those squashes just like everyone recommended and then pour a bunch of BBQ sauce on them. I find these go well with an "organic" double cheese burger and an "organic" milkshake.

organic stroke – LOL!! I think I'd have one too.
on February 10th, 2007 at 11:56 am
WOW – $60?!!!
We don't eat organic here (… unless Ore-Ida is considered organic??? – LOL)
I wish I had a great recipe to give you but I don't….I must be 'squash challenged' – because mine never turns out. 🙁

Too funny!
Okay, so now's there's another blog that I have to add to my "daily read." I need more chuckles in my life and you're just the remedy for it. BTW, I LOVE butternut squash, and since our Mom made it many times, TC SHOULD know how to cook it. Go ahead and ask her; just don't tell her I sent you!

Thoughts
You're probably better off heath-wise having one vegetarian meal a week, than replacing all your regular vegetables with "organic" vegetables.
Of course I have to wonder what "organic" means. There is no certifying body that determines organic standards, so anybody can call their stuff organic.
Of course, being the geeky kind of person I am, I usually declare "Yes, it's organic. Nothing here was made in a nuclear particle accelerator. No trans-uranic elements, guaranteed." As you can guess, I don't have many friends, and ones I do have also have a quirky sense of humour.

The day of love comin'! (Just in case you'd forgotten…)
So… I was just wondering if you'd decided to join in the "lovin' day" or if you're boycotting… AGAIN… this year? If you need any ideas… you could always come on over. Even YOU could learn a thing or… ah… several. (a;lsdkfa;sldfkj;sladkjf;alskdjf)
Love ya!

YOWZA!!!
Wow. I knew organic was a rip off-I didn't know it was THAT MUCH of a ripoff! To think-you could have bought a puppy for that! Or a bike! Or a TABLE! OKay-I will stop now.

I believe it!!
Here's another tip if you happen to go into the health food store again or order from the co-op:
Don't buy the Blue Diamond Natural Almond Nut-Thins: Nut and Rice Cracker Snacks — 0 Grams Trans Fat.
We bought a case of those. They taste like fish oil.

Ouch!
I can't imagine paying that much for vegetables, regardless what kind of super powers they may endow. I would suggest you avoid health food stores altogether, they are always over priced. Better to patronize local farmers, or if you live in the city find the local farmers market, there usually is one, and with much better produce (at super prices) than at the health food stores. Butternut squash, in addition to being great baked and put in pies, also makes a really good juice if you add sugar, cinnamon, and allspice. (Just like pumkin juice, but a little richer.)

Hmmm, I was just over there today; you never showed me those organic roots. I would have eaten one, for sure. I love those things. Brown sugar, cinnamon and a TON OF BUTTER. $60, huh? Do you KNOW how many brownie mixes we could have bought with that?!

Vegetables
Well Gena, I'd like vegetables too if you can put brown sugar and a ton of butter on them!

An alternative to organic is to use a veggie wash. Most grocery stores carry it-Krogers has one called exactly that-veggie wash! It is lemon juice based and does a really good job cleaning any junk off the surface. I do this most of the time, though I find good deals on organic at Kroger. What you paid was totally crazy, I don't think I have ever seen any that expensive!
Do try that baked squash, it's mmmm good!

Wow, what a great story, but I'd give anything to see a picture of your faces when she rang up your veggies. LOL. What a ridiculous price — kind of reminds me of those old-time peddlers who used to make a fortune selling their "miracle cures" when there was really nothing but sugar water (or whatever) in the bottles. Live and learn, I guess! They probably charged you a highly inflated by-the-pound rate.

I imagine you've already found some good way to cook the butternut squash, but sometime, you just HAVE to make the Butternut Bisque that I linked. My family loves it!
I buy my squash in the regular grocery store where I can afford it! 🙂 It is too bad that healthy costs so much.

ROTFLOL!
I came over from Anne Shaw's site. This is too funny!
How come it is so expensive to eat organically? you'd think with all the money they save not using peticides and fertilizer, it would be cheaper. 🙂

How funny!!
We love butternut squash. You can cook as stated, but we eat ours as a dessert. It's called Butternut Squash Crunch. It's got sugar, butter, cinnamon, and pecans in it. Not too healthy, but I am from the South and we LOVE our food.
