HodgePorridge Thursday
Yes, I know it’s hodgepodge , but doesn’t hodgeporridge sound better? *On Monday (or was it Tuesday?) I learned something very cool. It is the only way that seems like a reasonable (non-hard-workish) way to grow potatoes. You people who live in an apartment could even do this. Ok, here’s what you do. You get a garbage can, right? And you fill the bottom up with several inches of dirt and straw and bark and junk like that. Then you drop some potato eye pieces down there and cover them up with the same dirt mess. After a while you’ll get this greenery that will start growing up, and then you dump more soil and straw, etc over it. Then more green stuff will grow up and you keep on dumping dirt over it, right? Well, within several months, after you’ve continued to dump a bunch of dirt layers over the growing greenery, you can dump the whole garbage can upside down (preferably not on your living room rug) and get about 100 potatoes out of there! They require very little water, so the bottom does not need holes poked in it. I am very excited to try this. Is that not the coolest thing you have ever heard? I am so ready to try being a garden girl again. *My son, Dippy, was incredulous that I was unwilling to taste his Strawberry Sparkle Blast toothpaste this morning. Am I mean, or is he just weird? He just brought the tube over to my desk and was like, “Hold out your finger, you just gotta try this”. To further seal my decision to abstain, I noticed it was all gooped up and crusty around the top and edges. I just don’t think that’s normal. I’ve never carried my toothpaste around and offered it to others as a snack. I don’t know about that boy. *And in weirder news, last night I dreamed I was walking thru my house and saw James head lying in the hallway. So I picked it up and he sort of smiled at me. So I found the rest of his body and held his head against his neck and got coie to drive us to the Emergency Room. And the nurse who checked us in acted like it was not that big of a deal. And instead of trying to reattach his head, she kept trying to feed him. Which of course was ridiculous since it would only fall straight out of the bottom of his neck. I told you it was a hodgeporridge Thursday. And no, I am not experimenting with PCP. *And lastly, even though it is more than my expected three subject posts (according to Jay – the only person in the world who would notice such a thing), I’d like to recommend the first chapter of James. I am going thru a bible study group and I just love it. I really liked what John MacArthur had to say in the section I read last night: “James major emphasis in this section (the first chapter) of his epistle (and really in the entire letter) is this: if a person’s faith is genuine it will prove itself in times of trouble, whatever the nature or source of the trouble may be. For that reason, this epistle is valuable for unbelievers as well as believers. That is especially true for unbelievers who consider themselves to be Christians and need to recognize that a faith that is reliable only when things are going well is not saving faith and is worth nothing. It is, in fact, worth less nothing, because it deceives those who trust in it. Not only will it fail them when they need help the most, but also it will lead them to think they are headed for heaven when, in reality, they are headed for hell.” taken from John MacArthur Bible Study on the book of James: Guidelines for a Happy Christian Life |

It is very well put!
I've been using his NKJV study bible for about 5 yrs now and I absolutely love it. I think I have almost as many notes in it as he does LOL.
Have a Wonderful Blessed day 🙂

As long as I notice things that no one else notices, I also happened to notice that you mentioned your son Jame, the letter of Jame, and Jame MacArthur.
I personally prefer the King Jame Bible myself. Do you like Strawberry Jame?

LOL – I HATE the taste of kids toothpaste! My kids are always trying to get me to use their 'bubble berry' flavored toothpaste. Blech!
I went to the dentist and the hygenist used bubble gum flavored polish…I gagged!
On a positive note…I love the garbage can potatoes! What a cool idea! Our current house doesn't have room for a garden, but I could handle a garbage can – AND potatoes are a vegetable that my kids would actually eat!
Thanks for the fun idea!

If your toothpaste was strawberry sparkle blast, then you would carry it around all day like it was candy too!
Please tell me you at least tried it, right? Make the boy happy!

Jen…..You're a nut!!!!!
I never know when I go to read your blog if I'm going to be sitting here in tears, totally convicted by the Spirit, or laughing till I wet myself!! A mixed bag today! Gotta try the potatoes. You should try the toothpaste (though it is a little weird to walk around offering people samples, I will agree!). It is even weirder to dream about you beheaded son! And I'm off to read the first chapter of James in a new light!

Smarter than you? Oh my, that's sure not the case! I could never write brilliant articles like what you do. Nah, I was just funnin' (not picking like someone said). Like a great English composer once said, "I get by with a little help from my friends."

no, you are *much* smarter than me, sir Jay, and believe me, i am glad for it. Plus, it makes you useful. It's like having my own personal pet encyclopedia / grammar book that TALKS. heh heh heh. I am so funny. By the way, how's little flowbie? i miss that little squeezie-spud. Don't you wish she could just stay a baby for ever?

Oh my, where're my hip boots? 🙂
Flowbee is a lot of fun right now — she's all smiles, and has started blowing raspberries (which is always funny with our babies). Also, she's doing the "no-no's" — all our babies would reach a stage where they shake their heads back and forth. It must have to do with motor development or something, but it's really funny! Hope Auntie Jen and Auntie Gena get to see her before she grows too much more. Flowee started out as "Hurricane Florence" but she's really a good baby now.
They are nice when they are little — maybe someday with cloning, they'll genetically engineer a "pet baby" that will never grow up and stay a little baby forever, just like Mommy would like. That'd be pretty sick, wouldn't it? Be careful what you wish for, especially nowadays!
(I told my kids I wish someone would invent a "Baby Ray" where you shine it on your kids and they go back to being a baby for a while, just long enough to play and have fun, and when it's diaper time, they grow back to their normal age. Now *that* would be a great invention!)

I sure loved what you wrote about James (the biblical reference, not the headless James).
And I cracked up at the rest of it. You either need to lay off the caffeine or sugar – or both. Actually, maybe you need a fast. A good cleansing fast is good for the mind. Maybe just have yogurt or kefir or something. Or maybe some sprouts.

Now you know why the kids are always out of toothpaste
OK, so with the garbage can spuds, how much light do they need? And can they handle the cold? My fil would probably have another stroke if he thought I was garage gardening, but he's pretty much confined indoors, so maybe he wouldn't find out until the finished product arrived. I have failed too often at potato gardening in the great outdoors.
As for dreams, I think you topped me. Mine involved cooking my baby in the oven–not to eat her, just to warm her up a bit. She was perfectly fine and seemed quite happy about it, but I was horrified when I woke up from that.
Isn't it the testing that actually creates genuine faith? And isn't that why we should welcome trials, not to prove (to ourselves or anyone else) that we *have* genuine faith, but because those trials are what will develop our faith? Of course, the more and harder those our trials, the deeper and more mature our faith becomes. (My own is developing more maturity than I ever wished for…)

hi Steph, wow, yep babies in the oven would be a tad disturbing to wake up from.
Potatoes… nope, apparently they do not need much light at all. Somebody said that if you have a window in your garage you could even do them in there. I 'm gonna start my garbage potatoes on Monday or Tuesday. I will try and remember to give updates about that.

Spuds gardening
Now I know what to do with that forgotten bag of potatoes growing in my pantry! Trash can gardening, just what my brown thumb can handle. I am going to love explaining why I have stuff growing in my garbage can, but dead things in my flower bed.

"Speaking" of weird dreams, the other night I had a dream about YOU! And I hadn't even visited your blog that day. Anyway, a few other bloggers and I had gone to your house… and you put us to work! Scary!!! 🙂

Connie, bibilically I think that dream was meant to be more of a prophecy. You should get a group together and head down this way (soon). I will supply the lysol/ windex/ shovels and chainsaws. And i will even make you (have coie make you) some lunch!
