Mmmmm, Mmmmm, Chicken…
Believe it or not, this was not as disgusting as you would think. Yesterday was butchering day. Geoff, Coie and Ryann took down five roosters, and two are simmering (as we speak) in the crock pot with garlic and Italian seasonings. You’ll be proud to know that even I got in on the action. I rinsed them off after they brought them into the kitchen. Not bad for a California girl, eh?
I am sure that Coie and Ryann will soon have exceptionally disgusting, gory, step by step snapshots of all that was involved, but this is as grodie as I will let my blog get. I promise. And as a side note, I’d like to state that the Mr. and Mrs. B that Coie talks about in her latest post are *not* our dear friends the Burggrafs (besides, they are not in their 70’s and they are the exact opposite of what Coie is describing). It is a great post tho. What a proud momsie I am.

we actually did get a good amount of meat off of them — and it was surprisingly good! i made mashed potatoes and gravy to go with it and it was a *really* good meal. we cooked it for almost 20 hours on low in the crocky.

They are smiling while they do that?!!!!! Wow.
Reminds me of my girls. A neighbor called, was butchering, do we want to watch? Thought the boys would like it, they were too grossed out and thought I lost my mind, but the GIRLS desperately wanted to go, and they loved the experience.

How cool is that? I do have one question, what is that to the right on the table…looks like a finger. My mom grew up in a village in Greece and told me all about their slaughtering days. And, she could cut up a whole chicken in no time flat..I still envy that ability. Must be wonderful to have fresh meat that you have raised..you don't have to wonder what hormones your children are ingesting.

Coie and Ryann…I've always liked those two.

You really are inspiring. I really appreciate all the pics you put up.
You think the snow is MELTING HERE?? Rather, we just got walloped again a few days ago. NE winterstorm that gave us about 8 more inches (I think). My boys were saying every day "Oh, look, the snow is melting — look how much grass is showing today!" Then bam! It is 15 degrees F as I type this. But it is supposed to get above freezing later on – COME ON SNOW — MELT!!
On a much better note, this is the DAY that the Lord has MADE. I will rejoice and be glad in it!! And I am so thankful for so much.

I think that you have a terrific backyard for homeschooling. So many great lessons! What do I have, a piano, a violin, two acoustic guitars, and an electric drum.

When I was about 8, my sister and I went to a friend's farm for a day of chicken butchering.
We had no idea what to expect. We were never around anything like that before. Worse… we also were mostly vegetarians back then.
Chickens heads were getting chopped off then the hen was dunked in boiling water. If they acidentally lost their grip on that chicken, the hen flew around and tried to run with no head (blood and all). Truly where they got the saying!
Next a group of women sat around and plucked them.
My sister and I sat staring in wide eyed shock.
Later that week we had sore throats. Our doctor said it was pschosematic. (spelling?) We had sympathy sore throats for those silly chickens. LOL!

WOW~!
You have some serious country girls on your hands! I can't imagine the whole chicken thing. In fact, I wouldn't mind having chickens for layers but if one of them dies-I don't want to deal with it. So-we don't have chickens. 🙂
Have a hearty meal! 😉

Pig butchering, which our whole extended family has done for years and years, gives way this year to sausage making. We can live without the rest of it, but not without our Mennonite sausage. 🙂 I've been enjoying the pics of your family. You're a blessing!

I just read in "The Homeschool Minute" that you are not writing for that worthy e-zine anymore. My reaction?……."Awwwwwwww!!" (an appreciative reader from Canada)

looks familiar….
I had my first butchering experience this summer too. The U of M had an enormous amount of chickens and turkeys that had been fed a new experimental organic feed, and they needed to get rid of them. We got friends together, set up stations and assembly (dis-assesmbly?) lines and butchered 80 chickens and 15 turkeys in a day. For all that organic meat it came to 50 cents a pound. Wow! And even my son (eeew, gross!!) got into chopping off heads.
