Bubsy the Birthday Boy
My incredible son, Bo, turns 10 today. I cannot express how much I love this boy. He is probably the closest earthly thing there is to “a perfect son”. What a blessed momsie I am; it is handy that he is my oldest son because he has been key in influencing and encouraging his younger brothers to be strong, honest, hardworking, kind (hyper) godly boys. He is also very very strange. This is him a couple days ago playing on the tree swing after he had gone swimming in our muddy pond. What is it about kids and swimming? He and Emmiko and Dippy ask every day. It could be 20 below and they’d still be willing to paddle around in anything that holds water. It’s been another busy week. Five more little chickies hatched (we’ve now hatched a total of 27 chickies in our incubator – and all 27 are still alive!) AND guess what we’ve been drinking? Um, nevermind, don’t guess, I’ll just tell you: GOAT MILK. My family *loves* it. It tastes just like store milk (sweet even) and even better than the cow milk we were getting. Actually, I don’t know this personally — I’m the only one in the family who hasn’t tried it. But I have used it to cook with, so that should count for something. Coie got this goat milking contraption that makes it entirely non-gross (no stuff falling into the milk) and then she puts the milk in the freezer right away. Dippy asked if we had gotten “Sugar Goats”. I love that fact that I don’t have to buy milk and/or eggs anymore, and that we are able to cook up our own chickens. You have to admit… that is *very* cool. And this Sunday we are starting a New Members class at a church in |

Chicken Confession
I bought a book about FOUR years ago called Chickens in Your Backyard – and although I would love love love to raise them and have fresh eggs, etc. – chickens scare the me TO DEATH! I am not kidding. There is just something about them. I had a friend who had a bunch once and I was supposed to go and feed them a couple of times – and I nearly died doing it. It was almost more than I could bare.
Do you have nice chickens?

Julie, that is SO funny to me. and yes, our chickens are nice… especially smothered with mashed potatoes.
and i do understand your weird fear. I have an inordinate terror of anything bovine.

Awesome!
Once everyone in that congregation gets tired of having you over for Sunday lunch, let us know and WE'LL have you over! If you are going to the church I think you're going to, we attend church just 2 blocks away and we can whiz by on our way home and direct you to our abode.

I'm glad your chickens are doing well this year! I think we're getting some chicks next week. We live in the city so we can only have a few, but I'm excited about it. I grew up on a farm, and if Mama wanted a chicken for dinner by brother and I were sent off to the coop with an axe. Loved the pics of your girls cleaning the chickens. (I don't envy them though!)
Glad you're finding a church to settle in to.

Goat milk is good! I used to keep little dixie cups on hand and if I knew that friends were coming who had never tried it I would buy some cows milk. If they were willing to try I would give them two little paper cups, one with goat milk and one with cow milk and ask them to pick out the goat milk. They were always positive they could pick it out. Everyone was surprised that they couldn't tell the difference. I even had one girl tell me the cow milk tasted weird so that had to be the goats milk.
A friend of mine has three goat breeds we did not have, so one day we took some of our milk over there and we all sat around sipping milk from each goat breed to see if we could tell a difference. We definitely could, Nubian and Alpine were the best at least to the 8 of us that tried it.
I cooked with it too and I once had a friend over for dinner who had warned me to not give her any of that nasty goat milk. (She had never tried it.) I did anyway because I knew she would never know. I was right, she raved about the dinner (Homemade Chicken Pot Pie) and made a comment about how she appreciated that we didn't use any goat milk. We told her. She was blown away instead of being mad.

We love our church! I'm glad you've found a good church family as well.
I prefer my swimming to be in water that is around 90 degrees. But those crazy kids…their lips could be blue and they'd shiver "See mommy? It's not too cold!" Ummm…yeah…February is a great time to go swimming.
HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY! It is nice for the younger boys to have someone to look up to (other than momsie, dad and girls).

A ten year old boy is SOO much fun. My son is working on 12 now and it's still great, but there's something about them at 10. Still little, but starting to be more and more like their daddies.
I have a daughter who would swim in mid-winter, no joke. Just to see all the adults look at her with admiration. All done with a twinkle in her little 7yo eye. 🙂

What a cool pond…
Blessings to the birthday boy!
We have a goat, haven't bred her yet, but are wanting to attempt the goat milk "thing". We have a dozen hens, and egg production is picking back up. We're looking at getting more chicks…my mom, who grew up on a farm, says if we start raising them for meat, we'll never want storebought chicken again. ;o)
Blessings,

Happy Birthday to your Precious Son! Wow! Double digits!

I love my church!
I love my church! It is the church that I grew up in (9-18 yrs). My husband and I attended for the first 5 years of our marriage. We moved away (to Oregon) for 5 years and came back! Our church is filled with lots of different people: everyone being unified in the important things, while letting each other live in liberty in the non-important things. My friends love me and I love them. I can't imagine being in any other fellowship.
I have one 10 year old boy – what fun – and 2 little brothers coming up behind him. Happy Birthday to your son!

Wow, double digits, that was a big deal around here. Happy Birthday! We were just blessed with girly girls here, but one of them is 10 also.
We need to hatch out some chicks this year — are down to 4 banty hens and I need more eggs.
We also have 3 Angora goats that I am considering selling – I just didn't do anything with the Mohair like I dreamed. Now we are considering milk goats. Would like to hear more about how you do it or any books or other resources that you highly recommend. Do you do anything special to make sure the goat milk is clean & healthy? (You can tell I'm a rookie, can't you).
Love your blog.

Choosing a Church
Speaking of John MacArthur (from your last post)….he is doing a series on how to choose a church. It's been very good! Go here to listen:

Hee Hee!!
I had to laugh at your "staying in the closet". I have been wondering if I was the Only One with a 3 year old who pee's any where except the toilet. There has been many a time that I have stayed in the bed room when I heard my husband say "Don't Pee on the wall." I just cover my head with a pellow and wonder if it's ever going to end. 🙂 Take care.

Oh yes.
Corporate worship is really special. I love our church and know what you mean. I am so glad you found a place you love! It is so important to find a solid church with good leaders and special fellowship.
(I still miss you though!)
Warmly,
Kate

Avery Happy, yet late, birthday to Bobo.
I cannot believe that he is 10. Time surely does fly.
Coie mentioned that Geoff got up at 5am to go to a men's group thing. . .now that is dedication. You know Mark was telling me that the church he preached at was 30 minutes away and it is a "local" church. So really I think that an hour is not bad. Especially considering that you get the awesome preaching (which is on the internet by the way, Mark was listening to one of the sermon's and told me your pastor was preaching through the book of Roman's)!

ps. Can we have a cheaters HSB Literary Club for those of us who couldn't restrain ourselves and have already finished Ishmael?

Hi there!
We drive almost an hour to church every Wednesday and twice on Sundays… it costs us in gas, but it's worth every penny. It's the church we belong with and we just haven't found anything like it- the atmosphere is just something special- I've never experienced anything like it elsewhere, these people are real friends, real brothers and sisters, and it's just so sweet!
So glad you can find something like that to be a part of, I wish everyone could/would!
Enjoy the critters, (I have critter envy)

Hey Jen!
I just wanted to say… that water looks freezing! Them is some crazy kids! Oh and Happy birthday to Bo!
You will never know how much your reluctant testimony in the January issue blessed me. Just know that even though it may have been hard to share, it was exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Blessings,

Happy b-day to Bo! Be sure to be careful to keep a watchful eye our for Cottonmouth Water Moccasins (poisinous snakes!) around the pond – especially after long or heavy rains.
It is SO COOL that you are "raising" your own milk and eggs!! We are JUST inside our village limits and so we can't have farm animals (25 yards away we could!). But I go out to the Old Order German Baptist farms and get my brown eggs and whole – right from the moo cow – milk! It's such a cool set up…since they don't have electricity (Old Order lives just like Amish) they have a little shed that has a generator hooked up to it that runs the refrigerator inside. You just go into the shed, get your eggs and milk and put your $$ in a bucket on top of one of the friges! Isn't that awesome?!
As for church – we've been at our church for 11 years (on the last Sunday of June) and we are right there with you for travel time! It's a 70 miles round trip for us, too. But when you're where the Lord wants you, that's all that matters. We've been on the praise/worship team from nearly the beginning of our time there and it is such a blessing. I love our praise team members b/c everyone takes their "position" on the team seriously – we're NOT there for entertainment – although praise/worship can be a blast! But we are there with the heavy responsibility of leading God's people to His very throne! How COOL is that?! All of us are on the team excetp Jasper, she's more of a behind the scenes person. Ty & I also teach Sunday School (both together and seperately) from time-to-time.
It will be interesting to see where you find your niche! Isn't it exciting?
Blessings, Kim Wolf<><
