I have a fever that I will gladly part with…
Would you like it? It comes with a headache and sinus infection, but it sounds like you already have the headache and have no use for it. If you would like the sinus infection along with the fever, I will throw it in as a 2 for 1 deal…
I wanted to play with my blog tonight, but my head hurts to bad to mess with blinkies and templates….
Hope you feel better soon, Jen,

What is the *point?!*
The point, my dear, is to arm yourself with some very dramatic songs to sing in public so as to mortify your children into good behavior. See my blog for more about this technique. Get the info for free now before I write a book and start marketing it via a late-night, cheesy infomercial.

I know you MUST be lying!!! As in telling a falsity or an un-truth! Because you totally seem the type to bust into some weird wacko song in the course of your day, especially during your school time. Don’t you think that I believe for a minute that you don’t make up your own songs while you’re swinging from the rafters!
Musicals are just silly fun and if you don’t like them then…well…er….you are un-fun! So there… :-p
PS Can you name all the Von Trapp children??? Just something to think about while you’re sick in bed all day… hehehe…

Sound of Music
I love The Sound of Music. In fact my daughter has a cd with the VonTrapp kids singing. It is wonderful. By the way, your cute little red head says that you think I’m pretty cool!!! Well, you are pretty cool yourself and if you lived near me I’d come over with a yummy dinner. But alas, you are much tooooo far away and Fedex just won’t do. Feel better soon. Hope we don’t catch it in Oregon.

Take more tylenol…lot's of it.
I feel contaminated just reading this. As far as musicals go, I’ve never subjected myself to one….just not that sophisticated. However, I bet it would be cool if you turned down the volume on any musical and played the soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever. Wait, Grease was a musical….that was cool.

I agree with TC.
You must bone-up on your musical talent in public places, Jen. You know, couch, chair, and wall dancing, a la Singing in the Rain, and then singing very loudly, all sorts of trumpetish and forceful songs of hilarity. That way, your children will know never to spook you lest you break out in songs from Disneyโs finest, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. Now there is a musical of quality. John Davidson, Buddy Ebsen, Lesley Ann Warren, and Kurt Russell as a child – you will not want to miss it! Sing it with me now, “Dakota! Dakota! Where the air is free!!”
You will LOVE it.

Dear Jen-
The Sound of Music is very special to me. They have that great song about problems and Maria. If you haven’t seen it please put it on some list like “movies I don’t want to see but should” …
I updated my blog about our day at Dollywood and seeing Marsha there. Your right about everything you said about her. She said I’m her new best friend. What an honor! Stop by when you can. Get well soon!

Just wanted to say I enjoy reading your little blog here and I have to agree with you on musicals. There are very few that I can stand to sit through. I do like the Sound of Music though, it is a rare liking for me. Have an awesome day!

What about Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? You gotta like that one–even my boys do! I like My Fair Lady but I do wish they had let Audrey sing her own songs…

If an old curmudgeon like me likes musicals…
Okay, admittedly, there aren’t a *lot* of good musicals. But there are plenty to pick from that will lighten your load AND give you great ammo for public singing.
My Fair Lady – “…cotton, hay, and rags!”
Sound of Music – “Once there was a lonely goat herd…”
Grease – “Tell me more, tell me more”
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory* – “Who do you blame when your kid is a BRAT…”
Jungle Book – “The bare neccessities, with these a bear can rest at ease…”
Fiddler on the Roof** – “Tradition!”
The Music Man – “…thumpthin thpecial, jutht for me!”
Oklahoma*** – “Oooooooooklahoma where the wind blows…”
West Side Story – “Luck be a lady tonight…”
O Brother, Where Art Thou? – “Good Lord, show me the way…”
* Also has great characters to compare your children to when they are not behaving well. (For instance, Ms. Veruca “I want it NOW” Salz)
** A good threat for pre-teens that their wedding could be arranged for them.
*** Some of the loudest, most embarrassing songs to your children come from this movie.

You can't be serious?
You must be hallucinating! Musicals are so KEWL! My Fair Lady is one of the greats, I admit. What about Brigadoon, Oklahoma, Roman Holiday, Singing in the Rain? DO you realize Gene Kelly would have been unemployed and not revelaed his God given talent without these?! If you are still feeling this way when your illness passes, you might consider seeking professional help.
P.S. My dear hubby just happened to pick up a past ed of TOS. He read your article about sibling rivalry and laughed his pants off. Literally. When he finished, he said, and I quote, “Hey are kids aren’t that bad?” Thanks! Leslie

I’m so glad I’m not the only one out there who doesn’t do musicals. My husband likes to torment me with them. He was one of those theatre-nut-actor types when he was in high school and college and I don’t know how many musicals he’s forced me to watch in his efforts to civilize me. The only one I came close to liking was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Democrat – or was it Dreamcoat? He’s given up now – poor hubby, married to such a heathen. He has a form of torture related to chinise water torture – it’s “I’m going to sing horrible songs from musicals” torture – and he uses it on ME – not the kids! How about going to his blog and telling him how mean he is?!
JennMarie
ps — if you like fevers so much, I can send you some contaminated kleenex. I wonder what your posts would be like if you were hallucinating?
on November 10th, 2005 at 9:26 am
No way…
Okay, I am in total disagreement with you here. Of course there are some musicals where I think, “Okay, this song is boring”, but perhaps it’s because I love to sing that I enjoy musicals. C’mon – “The Sound of Music”, “Brigadoon”, “Oklahoma”, “State Fair”, “Summer Stock”, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, “Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang”. That’s okay if you don’t like them though. Whatever. Hope you’re feeling better soon. Oh and by the way, “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, medicine go down, medicine go down. Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, in the most delightful way!” I hope you get that stuck in your head while you’re hallucinating and feverish. Oh, I’m sorry, did I just say that?

I will admit
I am a junkie for musicals….this week I let the kids start late on their school work because Grease was on.
Shame on me!!!

Forget my comment yesterday ….
I know yesterday I said that you are not offensive in you writing …. but you just crossed the line! WOMAN …. listen to me; maybe it is the fever that is coming talking, but musicals are the greatest! Do you not even like Fiddler on the Roof?

Uh!
Okay – more motrin for you! Musicals are awesome! I love them – Oliver!, Fiddler on the Roof! Remember that thing about sharing a brain I said yesterday, I officially take it back! Just kidding! To each his own! I sure hope you’re feeling better and don’t make random, unusual posts – – -oh wait, I forgot you do that all the time. ♥ Julie

Come on . . . you couldn’t seriously give up “Sound of Music” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Fiddler on the Roof”?
We all sing along . . . or fast forward through if it really is too long.

Ok, everyone just calm down. Jen is OBVIOUSLY not well. She didn’t know what she was saying. Right, Jen? Right? You can’t possibly feel this way. Oh I’m devastated. I thought you were my hero. sigh. Just this week, every single CD I’ve listend to has been a soundtrack. BTW, Confessor, Luck Be a Lady is from Guys and Dolls. ๐ Hope you feel better soon Jen! (and that you return to your senses about this musical thing….)
on November 10th, 2005 at 9:52 pm
Ahem…
..but I do need to humbly correct the Confessor: “Luck be a Lady” is from Guys and Dolls, not West Side Story…And here’s my confession, JenIg, Confessor, et al:
I LOVE MUSICALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Still wanna be my neighbor?) I only sing when the vacuum’s running, or when I’m doing dishes, or when I’m waiting for the laundry cycle to finish…..uh oh….gotta go-I feel a strong song urge coming on…Jen the Jammie

musicals…hmmmm…common conversation around here runs like this…oh no! she’s going to do it! And everyone, even the extras, are going to break out into a perfectly choreographed dance routine. If I started singing like that in the middle of the street, people would begin a perfectly choreographed stoning…not that any genre of moviemaking is known for its realism…news programs included.

Favorite musical ~ Fiddler on the Roof
A close second ~ My Fair Lady
For laying on the floor laughing hysterically ~ Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
They’ve made me cry – made me laugh – made me walk away shaking my head, but not before getting some song in my head that I can’t shake out for weeks!
