Ok, so it's official; we are MOVING. Far….far…. far away from high taxes, impossible housing prices and liberal laws (how I'll miss Barbara Boxer). We're kind of thinking about Tennessee but that's not set in stone. So where do YOU live? Is it great? Do you like it? Why? Tell All. AND, for your viewing pleasure, here is the best picture that has ever been taken of me. It captures the depth of soul… the inner me… the runway model that I could have been… |

Great pic!
I live in Colorado because… well… I was born here, I am 6th generation. I love it here! I love waking up in the mornings to see the purple mountains, clear skies, fresh clean air, awesome sunrises and sunsets, and there are no cockroaches.
It is great here!
About the pic! Wow! You are a brave soul to show such a 'deep' look at you!

P.S. Nancy and I still need to talk more about next week and our schedules.

We live in Constanta, Romania where sales tax is 19%. That's down from 22%! And the cost of houses………..well, looks like we'll be renting forever……… Oh, you were thinking of staying in the states??
We are from Decatur, Alabama. I think it's a great place to live. Not too small, not too big. Big cities nearby if you need them. Houses are very affordable there (or at least they were when we left over 3 years ago!) compared to other places.

Great Pic!
We live in CT, originally from NY. The taxes are high and housing is insane and the winters are long! We are thinking about moving south…or west…New England is beautiful though, especially in the fall. (One just has to look above all of the Volvo wagons and BMW suv's)
Good luck!

Oooooklahoma….
Okay, I'm actually living in Virginia right now, but it's not a forever thing. Oklahoma has great homeschooling laws, wonderful people, and it's not so far south that the humidity will pull you into the ground (okay, maybe for *part* of the summer, but not *year 'round*).
Cost of living (housing, etc.) is good.

Lovely photo…looks like the same pose the camera seems to capture on me!
We must have gone to the same school of modeling!
We live in SW Florida, where there is no income tax, sales tax is 7%, winter and spring are perfectly delightful…great outdoor weather, BUT home prices have SOARED to 400% in the past year alone, we have spiders, snakes, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and gators, the humidity during July through early November(and sometimes beyond) means wearing makeup or getting your hair done is a total waste of time and money, and during hurricane season we live for the "every 3 hour" weather updates as we plot the movement of storms in our direction!
Guess that means you won't be moving here!
on July 8th, 2005 at 9:16 am
TEXAS
I have to say that I wouldn't leave either! We have no state income tax, in the area we are in you can get a 4bdr, 2 1/2 bath house for $175,000, homeschooling has NO restrictions.
I have many such photos as the one above, I don't think I am quite so brave as you as to post them on my blog though!

Well how about…. lunch at my house….or a free zoo…

We don't have hurricanes or earthquakes.
Just the right amount of snow and rain.

You are cuter than Cindy Crawford! Hey- ALL my pictures are gross. My poor husband even tries to refrain from taking them!
We live in Washington state. Gorgeous! You have it all- deserts, ocean, mountians, etc. But- liberal as all get out! Taxes- don't get us started on THAT topic. Housing prices- here's an example of the area we just moved from: 2100 SQ foot newly constructed home on 1/4 acre in rural community selling for $240,000.00 right now. I know because the owners/contractors are good friends.
The Seattle area is WAY more $$$.

Ohio is "The Heart of it All"! I live just above Dayton/Montgomery County…home of the Wright Brothers/Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the famous Air Force Museum (WAY cool!)/Paul Lawrence Dunbar and City Bar-B-Que…WOOHOO!!! Where I live is in Miami County, a great rural county…we have everything from quaint little family farms to $2 million homes, great festivals, lots of homeschoolers(!!) and beautiful falls. We actually have all 4 seasons here (5 if you count road construction). I would be glad to show you around!
Do you really not know where you're going? E-mail me with the details if you get a chance.

Ditto on Oklahoma
Oklahoma is the BEST place to homeschool – no laws! It has cheap housing – you can buy a mansion for the price of a condo where you live, it's warm most of year (a little too hot in summer but oh, well, there's air conditioning, and it's in the middle of the Bible belt so if you need a church, you will have no excuse not to find one to your liking! Besides, I'd love to have you near by! You sound like a fun person to know.

GREAT LAKES STATES RULE!
Jen, you had the right idea with Michigan. We're in Ohio, but it's basically the same idea. Life is great here in this part of the country. The summers are usually very mild — highs in the low 80s, good sleeping weather at night. You usually get a heat snap in the 90s of a couple weeks, then it's over. The fall is absolutely beautiful — golden evenings and wonderful fall colors. The winter… well, it would probably be an acquired taste for you California types! 🙂 We love the snow. It's beautiful, we love to ski and it's not really all that much trouble. In a bad winter, you'll get about three bad storms, and the worst part usually only lasts the month of January. The springs are usually pretty wet, and this is much more hateful than the winter. But God's Creation is green and lush, and hikes in the park are cool and shady.
The best part is, there are no earthquakes, hurricanes, rattlesnakes, scorpions, fire ants, lizards, cockroaches or any of that other fun stuff that comes with living in one of the coveted sunny states. That's fine, we'll keep the snow instead. Our friend is a little California girl from San Jose, and she's been with her hubby in Michigan for several years. She's not a big fan of the winters, but she likes the easy-going pace of life, and the friendly Midwestern people.
Also, the prices of real estate and just about everything else are super-duper cheap compared to the fashionable coasts, and that's because there are no jobs! The jobs are also on the fashionable coasts. But hey, you can't have everything, right? -jay and deb

Detroit is the place for me
High taxes and cars you see
Hawaii is where I'd rather stay
But my dear family is here, come what may
Life is great where ever you live
If to Jesus, all the glory you give
So seek to serve HIM where ever you be
And heart and home will never be far apart, you'll see!
Okay a corny poem at 11 at night. But all that to say, live for HIM wherever he leads and you'll be right where you need to be.

The true you –
Getting caught by a camera like that is just the way it goes for us moms. Do they catch us when we are photo-ready? – NO! It's pictures like that that keep me from putting myself into scrapbooks or at least those imaginary scrapbooks that I really am going to get around to some day.
I posted a comment on Gena's blog about TN (where we used to live) and KY (where we are now). We love all 4 seasons here. We love the slower pace of life. We love living in the Bible belt. We love being able to afford land and having great neighbors. KY's homeschool laws are very relaxed and we're grateful for the freedom we have to homeschool here. TN is another good homeschool state, but I think you do have to do standardized testing and be under an umbrella school. No big deal, but just enough to keep me on the KY side of the state line! : )
Wherever God takes you is going to be awesome. Play Steven Curtis Chapman's "The Great Adventure" and head this way!

4 states reviews
Jen I think it is great that you all are thinking about moving. What a fun adventure! I pray that the Lord shows you all where to live. He knows the very best place for your family where you will be blessed and be a blessing to others.
We have moved around quite a bit with my hubby's job (Computer Consultant), so I have lived in Texas, New York, Connecticut and now Minnesota. Although the housing is more affordable in the south (you can get twice the amount of house for the money), the heat can get to ya after awhile. I have found that four seasons work great for our family because you have something new to look forward to every 4 months. Our favorite place to homeschool so far is Minnesota. There are so many christian homeschool families here, great outdoor adventures and great co-ops & churches to choose from. Not to mention the people are really nice.
Connecticut was great because of the natural beauty — just breathtaking living amidst the Litchfield Hills and state forests. However the housing prices were outrageous. Finding an "active and alive" church there was next to impossible, because of the BIG occultic influences in the New England area, that have suffocated many of the churches there. It is defininately a mission field if there ever was one in the US.
We looked into moving to Tennessee at one time but found that the employment opportunities are limited there. It is a beautiful place to live — no doubt! The Ashville and mountain regions are breathtaking, but take heed that there is a wide occultic influences in the Ashville area (also known as the Wiccan capital). I would stay closer to Nashville if you want a god christian environment for your family. Regardless . . may the Lord's perfect will be done and may He lead you to the place where your family is supposed to live. Can't wait to hear the reports on your choice. May I recommend a book to you? It is called the Places Rated Almanac, and it will give you great statistics about a particular place you want to move.

Great look.. would fit right in here…
…In the Lynchburg, Forest… Virginia area! We would love yet another homeschooling family to join us here in our great town! We are so blessed here with gorgeous mountains and great neighbors. We prayed for three years for a place to move to and God placed us on what we have nicknamed "Homeschool Lane"! Two homeschool families within shouting distance has been just a blessing. Wonderful homeschooling network too… great opportunities for our children. We would welcome you and your family any day! 🙂

You'll love North Carolina!
Jen:
North Carolina! Hands down the best place to live! Take your pick, the beach and the mountains. This is a wonderful (and easy) place to homeschool (thanks to all the hard work of NCHE) and raise a family. We have NASCAR and great college basketball. Oh, there are lots of great places to camp, too! LOL… Plus, if you've never experieced an ice storm or hurricane, it's all right here in the Tarheel state.
I recommend somewhere in the mountains like Boone or Asheville.

I live in….
I live in a teeny tiny town in southwestern Minnesota. It's a cute little town with lots of ups and downs. The homeschooling laws in Minnesota aren't too tough ~ if you want to check them out, go to MACHE (Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators) on the web. The taxes are relatively high, I guess. I don't have much to compare them to, but my dad is determined to "retire away from Minnesota and the high taxes". I guess I think the taxes are tolerable…. We have beautiful seasons!!! I can definitely say that we are able to enjoy ALL FOUR seasons! There is a lot of history in and around my little town ~ Laura Ingall's lived and traveled here; Paul Bunyan, the Jolly Green Giant and Charlie Brown are big here; we have the Mall of America….. Winthrop, the town where I live, is a quiet town. Our biggest excitement is when the local cop issues a ticket!!
I am sure that there are lots of wonderful places to live. As for me and my family, Minnesota is home.
Blessings on your move!!! ~Beckie

Move to Tulsa!
Tulsa is the most family-friendly city in the country, and HEY, you already know a good pastor and a dandy church here, right? 🙂 Yep, that would be us, the Gundersens. Well, we shall see what the Lord in His good providence does with your family and how He leads you, but for our part, it would be an honor and blessing to have your family in our church and among us, JenIG. A vote for Mississippi, the Hospitality State!
Well, moving from California to Mississippi would require a bit of a cultural adjustment…but it's a beautiful place with lush greenery (magnolias, pecans, crape myrtles, oaks, maples, and more) and friendly people. Real estate prices are WAY lower than California, and sales tax is 7%. I was born in Mississippi, and though I've lived in Miami, Atlanta, and Columbia SC, my current town of Tupelo is my favorite. We have a wonderful church–in fact, I moved here from a smaller town an hour away just to be near my church. Tupelo has a population of about 35,000, has good resources for a city that size, including a symphony and community theater, and is considered fairly progressive (at least for Mississippi) with good job prospects and growing industry. Of course, if you work from home, it doesn't matter about the job market, right? (One of the joys of entrepreneurship!) Memphis is about 2 hours away, and Jackson MS about 3 hours.
Mississippi has good homeschooling laws, too. All we have to do is file an annual "certificate of enrollment" with a simple description of our educational program (I just list subjects). That's all! I find the name of the document amusing, since we're NOT enrolling, which is the whole point!
I think I'm obligated by a city ordinance to specify that Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis…. 😉
What fun to contemplate heading out for a brand new territory…brand new to you, at least!

The DEEP SOUTH…
What a ton of comments you have! I'm a MK, so when I came back to the States, I had the pick of the lot. After traveling in almost every state (all but Alaska and a few New England ones), I chose the Deep South to live in. I just LOVE the culture here, the Bible Belt mentality, and the low housing and taxes.
FLORIDA has been good to us for 15 years. You can't do better than Jeb Bush, and we got our 1250 sq. foot brick house on a 1/4 acre for only $45,000 in 1993. And no income taxes and no sales taxes on groceries. Homeschooling wasn't a big deal there, just a one-time letter to the superintendent and a once-a-year check with a local teacher (someone in our SS class) BUT Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis have visited and now that house is worth $120,000.
That's good for us…because we're selling that house, since we moved just across the border to ALABAMA. (I still claim Jeb as my governor). It's a pretty state here, and we still have the perfect beaches, but now we have income taxes and sales tax on groceries. Hs is also easy here, and now we don't have to have that once-a-year check with a teacher.
Next, we are looking at moving to TENNESSEE or NORTH CAROLINA in the next 2 years. We want lots more land and can't afford as much as we want, here in this very touristy, growing area. Plus, we want four seasons and a few hillls or mountains.
No matter what, though, we are staying in the DEEP SOUTH for life!
on July 16th, 2005 at 5:04 pm
Good old liberal…
Maryland! If you really enjoy everybody not agreeing with you, you might like to move to the Old Line State, that can never make up it's mind. Oh, and did I mention the only thing predictable about the weather is that it's humid.
But I love it! I can drive to D.C., see all the monuments, then spend an evening at the Inner Harbour in downtown Annapolis. Then you can go to the Harbour in Baltimore (Bawlimore!!!), eat some ice cream, then visit Fort McHenry and see where our national anthem was written. Can't ask for more!
on July 17th, 2005 at 8:52 am
Jen
Thank for the compliment on my blog site! I still have a lot to do.
Ya'll(your family) need to CARRY(aka drive) you family down(even if it isn't south) to ALABAMER(aka Alabama). We have great "homeschool" laws, the truth is we don't have any!!! Outside of being with a church-school, you just register with the board of education, well actually the church-school files that and you turn in attendance records. We have it so easy here 🙂 Plus the area we are in is a great place, it is a lake community, to live in to raise the kids. The name of our city is Pell City. It is just east of Birmingham, which is convenient to the big city.

South Africa, Anyone?
Have you ever thought of moving to South Africa? Cape Town in particular? 🙂
It is a beautiful city, in an awesome country, and very, very far away from wherever you live in the Northern Hemisphere! Look Cape Town up on the internet, if you are interested in seeing what it looks like here. Could try the University of Cape Town website (www.uct.ac.za) for some great shots of our famous Table Mountain (the back view of it). UCT is the varisty I am studying at – first year there, after homeschooling for 7 years.

So glad you stopped by site!
I came to your site after you stopped at mine, and I'm SO glad! You are TOO funny! LOVE the picture! Life is too short to take yourself too seriously!
As for your questions… we live in Minne-SNOW-ta. I've always thought to be so funny, since the cold is a much bigger factor than the snow. I've been to McCall, Idaho (absolutely the most gorgeous place to be in January!) and they have tons of snow… but it's not -40 below! Add in their mountains… and it's really beautiful… however, come June, I don't want to still be seeing snow, so that takes care of that! Minnesota is EXTREMELY liberal, so I'm not even going to try to make it on your list of "possibilities"! We had Jesse Ventura for a govenor… need I say more? My husband and I grew up here, so all our family is here… we're (IM)patiently waiting though… we feel as if the Lord has been getting our hearts ready to leave for years…
There's so many beautiful places in America, depending on the time of year. I guess it's a lot like our lives. (Gotta have the bad times to appreciate and realize the good.) It's one of the reasons my husband and I want to get a motor home and tour the U.S. for a year! We'd just go to where ever it's nice! Oh… I get warm fuzzies just thinkin' about it! What a great homeschool experience too! Instead of reading about the places, we'd be at them! I see that you have six kids as well, and from your previous posts, I'd say you're just as crazy as us… so you could probably do this too! Check out my blog (homeschoolblogger.com/dandelionseeds) under "Our Dream" and let the "craziness" spread!
Our big question lately (and one I'll be posting on my blog) is…
Where are you going?… and what are you leaving behind? Check it out to see… a good question to ask ourselves where ever we call home. Blessings to you and yours!
In Him,
Amy

Michigan….
My hubby and I have lived in Michigan all our lives as have our parents, grandparents….and it goes back to my great-great-great-great grandparents. We love it here! We have no hurricanes, very few tornadoes, no earthquakes, no avalanches. We have no tarantulas, gila monsters, rattlesnakes (except for the rare Massasauga), scorpions, sharks, and I'm sure there are more. We have beautiful lakes (big and little), forests, flatlands for farming, and convenience of cities. The springs and autumns are spectacular! The summers can be a bit hot (thank goodness for a/c) and winters can be a bit cold for me. We have wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables in summer and fall. We love to can peaches, pears and make applesauce each year. We can tomatoes, make salsa, can and freeze beans. If you can't move here….be sure to visit the magnificent Great Lakes State of Michigan!!!

Have to respond to this
I posted this EXACT same question on an email list I am on. I live in AL. I see someone posted from Pell City, which is funny, b/c that is where I am also and it's a small town. I like the small town, the fairly low house prices, the low taxes, the homeschooling laws are fine. Have you been to http://www.findyourspot.com ? It's fun and it came up with places for me in Guntersville, AL north of me) and a couple in TN and KY. I do like the south. I am orginally from Houston, TX, so the heat doesn't bother me too much. 🙂

Had to respond again to tell you that Maryville was the TN place I was talking about. I am not sure if this is rude, I don't know my blogging manners yet. I made a plan to go on vacation to visit some of these. Whenever dh can get away our plan is guntersville, AL; Paris, TN; and Maryville, TN. It looks like a GREAT place to live!

We're moving too!
Actually that's what my blog is all about. You have so many comments here that I hesitate to post another – but we are moving from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia which, believe it or not we are in an area where commuters to Washington, D.C. live!!! It's called a "bedroom community" which means our taxes and property value have increased dramatically. We should be able to sell our house for triple what we paid for it. The bad thing is that our children will have a terrible time starting out as young adults in the economy that exists. My husband is a native Texan and has been living here for 17 years with me. It's time for us to head "home". His parents are getting older, and our children don't know their family on their dad's side. We are very excited. Keep us posted on what's happening with you.
