Dim-Wits Are People Too

I don’t try to be a total oaf.  I think it genetic.  I sort of embarrassed myself today when I was processing the mail for the magazine.  There are a ton of contest entries coming in, and it just so happened that I saw an address from Morristown.  That’s like *totally* where I live.  And it wasn’t Kris Price, so I was fully intrigued.  So I tore open the envelope and saw the name on the form, and I KNEW for a fact I had talked to this lady when I lived back in Cali.  I remembered her because we were just getting ready to move to TN and she knew Kris Price (she had called to subscribe).


being the desperate loser that I am, I looked over at Geo (we were in
the car on the way to Sam’s Club) and I said, “I know this lady.  I should call her and see if she has a daughter Ryann’s age and invite her to Ryann’s b-day party”.  Geoff
just started grinning (like he always does when I act like a buffoon)
and told me that it was probably some violation of our company privacy
policy.  Anyways, I called her up, and to her credit she was very kind.  She
didn’t hang up on me, she didn't take out a restraining order, and
rather said she would be delighted to come hang out with us some time.


Anyhow, I am excited to make another new friend.  Now I need to think up a reason to have a party so I can have her family over.  Anybody else live nearby who wants to come?  I promise I will be on my most normal behaviour if you come over.

    New Friend!

    Good for you Jen! You remind me of my new friend Katie. She came up to me at the library a few weeks ago and said “you homeshool right?” and I said “yes” and she said “why dont you come over for lunch next week, our kids can play together.” So I said sure. Went over to her house and had a great time. Sometimes you just have to get out of your comfort zone and go for it. Takes a lot of bravery.

    P.S. I would love to come over and have dinner but I live in New York.

    My wife weighs 155 lbs???!!! Are you kidding me. They say the computer adds like 15 lbs. Did you take that into account?? 155??? No way. Hey, why don’t you have a contest to see who can gain 10 lbs the fastest?? I mean, isn’t that a little more realistic for us middle aged folks?? That’s a great idea. I’m gonna go start right now. I’ll win by morning!!!

    I don’t think you should be embarrassed at all, my fruitcakey friend! Some of my very best friends came from either me or them going out on a limb like that. One cannot have too many friends! And you have to be friendly to make friends…something you’re very good at.

    Jen, I think it is super cool, that you called up a total stranger and invited her to come hang out! I wish people were like that in the northeast. I was most amazed after taking a trip to Atlanta and people walked right up and talked to you like they had know you forever! I love that!

    As for weight, you can post that I’m going to lose 10 pounds, but not what I weigh 🙂

    Boy do I feel like a total Dim Wit

    In trying to be clever (about my weight) I’ve proven myself a fool (there’s a quick line to a devotional for ya) and despite my usually pretty decent math skills, somehow I’ve inflated my actual weight by 10lbs. (no this was not a cheap trick to win the challenge, I don’t think “imaginary” weightloss counts) Pride goeth before a fall & all that.


    Actual weight 165 -goal weight 135 leaves me only 30lbs over my goal.

    Somehow that is much more attainable feeling than 40 lbs

    I’m such a wierdo!

    (but at least I’m in good company 😉

    Ok, did you call Amy Johnson …. She like totally wants to meet you and talk with you! Tell me it was her, please?? If not, I want to get you guys together sometime – she loves your editorials! you have to tell me who you called 🙂

    Oh, by the way, I want to join your challenge … let me weigh myself tomorrow! I’m posting lots of tips daily on my weight loss blog, Through Thick and Thin. I’m frustrated that I haven’t lost ANYTHING since 12/18, but I’m still hanging in there!

    Y’know Mrs. Ig, having a race to lose weight is the key to Oprah-style yo-yo dieting. You young-uns are only on the threshold of middle age, and are just now figuring out that you can’t stuff your faces like you could as teenagers and still look and feel like you want. But pro’lly a lot of you haven’t yet discovered the joys of high blood pressure and acid reflux and all the other treats that await over 40.

    Anyhow, if I have any meager wisdom to show for my accumulating gray hairs, one’s best bet is to change one’s eating habits and increase activity level. Try making stuff like veggie stir-fry and skipping dessert Monday through Thursday and have a Friday Pizza-and-Movie Pig Out Night. The anticipation of a weekend treat helps you get through the week. And instead of camping out at HSB, try to take a mile-long walk instead.

    Starvation dieting and scale-watching is frustrating and self-defeating. Your metabolism goes low and your body actually burns fat slower. Plus, when you reach your goal, you tend to go back to your old eating habits, eventually pounding it all back on. But if the poundage comes off slow, it stays off longer and you feel better in the long run.

    By eating low-fat all week and stuffing my face on the weekend with pizza and restaurant food, I went from almost 270 down to 237 over a one year period. I got back into size 36″ Levis for the first time since the early 90s. The best part is feeling great and being able to be able to stand up without a “head rush” and all that good stuff. It would be nice to settle in around 210 again, maybe by next year (LORD willing).

    Oh yeah, I forgot to add that it really helps to keep flushing out the basic plumbing — drink lots of water, get plenty of fresh air, eat more fruit and veggies to “keep you regular,” do some aerobic stuff to keep up the circulation — all the stuff that we all know we should be doing anyway. The problem with Americans is that we always go overboard and do everything to excess and then get burned out, which is also self-defeating.

    Wow! How neat…I think it’s always fun to meet new friends, especially homeschoolers. Hey, what an opportunity you’ve created for giving away the puppies. How about putting one in each party goodie bag. Or maybe play the fishing pole game with the magnet and stick a big paper clip on the puppy’s collars. I really fell off the diet bandwagon with DD’s scooby doo birthday cake, but the dumb thing is almost gone. I even tried to leave the plastic wrap off of it so it would get stale…but some sneaky cake lover was checkin’ behind me.

    Well, after refusing to come to 2 of your parties now : o, I would still be delighted to be invited again. You don’t need an excuse for us (but maybe some pie!). One of these days, I’ll get my blog and “name” up and running.

    My husband lived in White Pine (which is just around the corner) before we were married. We now live in Chattanooga area which is only about 2 hours away. For some reason I was thinking you guys were all out Memphis way.

    Oppps! What is this? You mean my diet is supposed to consist of something OTHER than Chocolate? here I am telling all the weight loss people "nursing people are not supposed to diet so I will worry about cutting back AFTER I am done nursing" And now you tell me I was supposed to eat healthy? ha ha ha. Actually my poor son. Nursing still at soon to be a year next sunday,,, when I eat healthy – broccoli etc he is a wreck! If I didnt supply him with his daily chocolate – ok whos kidding hourly chocolate – he would have withdraw!
